Saved from danger in the forest

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

Deep in a forest in British Columbia, I learned the value of overcoming and destroying fear. It is an essential step needed for healing in any high-stakes situation.

Visiting from my home in England, I knew nothing about the local wilderness or the wildlife. I’d been raised in the suburbs of London, with only parks to give me an idea of what the countryside was like. With occasional visits to rural areas, I’d never ventured on my own into the wilderness.

On this particular day, I drove far away from the city to a remote logging road I’d been to once before. The road led to a forest. This time, I drove further than I had before, parking my car at the end of the road. Then, I hiked along a trail that led up into a nearby mountain, a mountain that was supposed to be an example of a primitive forest. Climbing the trail would allow me to get a better view.
