Gustav: Don’t give in to fear

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

As the third anniversary of Katrina’s touch-down in New Orleans approaches, Gustav, as of this writing a tropical storm but expected to reach a category 3 hurricane status, is heading for the Gulf Coast. There is some expectation that Hannah, also a tropical storm, could make landfall somewhere in the area around the same time as Gustav. Officials in New Orleans are already making plans for a mandatory evacuation, and people are stocking up on batteries and water bottles.

Some of them are also feeling the accumulation of fear, brought on by the memories of Katrina, the anniversary, and uncertainty that the work done by the Army Corps of Engineers since then will hold. The relatively light hurricane seasons of the last two years haven’t actually tested their efforts.

Our prayers can reach out to residents of the Gulf Coast and help to prevent panic while also supporting intelligent decisions by city and state officials in affected areas. One thought that can be very helpful is that God is divine intelligence, infinite Mind. In practical terms, this means that no one needs to be confused or to make a poor decision that may threaten their own or others’ safety. Each has access to infinite intelligence and is able to hear the spiritual intuitions, or angels, that God sends all of us. These intuitions will guide to right decisions, such as to what things to take, if and when to leave, where to go, and all the myriad details that may need to be dealt with.
