The healer in all of us

I was about four months pregnant and in the office when I got a call from my obstetrician. He apologized for bothering me at work, but had something important to tell me. One of the tests I’d taken as part of my routine prenatal care indicated that my baby had a strong chance of having Down syndrome.

My boss was a good friend, as well as a Christian Science practitioner. She spends her time healing people spiritually, so I headed right to her office after I hung up the phone. Crying, I told her what the doctor had said. She immediately hugged me and stated very firmly, “Oh, no, it’s too late for mortal mind to get a hold of this child.”

Mortal mind is a term Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, used to indicate anything opposed to God. Mrs. Eddy wrote that mortal mind “is the false belief that mind is in matter, and is both evil and good; that evil is as real as good and more powerful. This belief has not one quality of Truth.” She went on to say, “The truths of immortal Mind sustain man, and they annihilate the fables of mortal mind ….”
