My real purpose—to be a Christian Science healer

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

When my mother was in the delivery room for my birth, the Christian Science practitioner who was praying along with my mother for a harmonious birth mentioned that she expected me to be a Christian Science practitioner. No one told me about this prediction, and years passed by. I started my first career in theater at fourteen and then, later, after college, moved into business.

It was around that time that my mother told me about what the practitioner had said, and I recall thinking, “Of course, that’s my real purpose—that’s what I’m for—to be a Christian Science healer.”

We tightened our belts a little, but we didn’t feel pinched. We did much of the work on our home ourselves—painting it, hanging wallpaper, and so forth. I did all activities pertaining to homemaking. Our tasks never felt burdensome. We recognized that spiritual qualities—energy and gratitude—were part of God’s supply for us. We felt that any effort to glorify God regarding order and beauty in our lives paid off abundantly in spiritual progress.
