Immigration: a Biblical perspective

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

Immigration is a huge global issue right now. But it’s not a new one—migration has been going on for centuries, and the same concerns and criticisms apply each time: someone is moving in on "our" territory. Someone is changing "our" sense of country. Could African and Eastern European immigrants in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom destabilize the continent? Do Hispanic immigrants endanger the United States?

Immigration is a complex issue that cries out for satisfactory answers for all involved. And as with many other challenges, it's worth looking to the Bible for solutions. It is rich with insights regarding migration of peoples.

In Bible times, as today, war, famine, poverty, and persecution kept people on the move to new areas, hoping for a better life. There are stories of individuals, extended families, and whole tribes shifting from one location to another. For instance, Abram, Sarai, and nephew Lot move from Ur (modern-day Iraq) to Canaan (present-day Israel), and their migration is successful.
