Gratitude transforms a lonely Thanksgiving

For many of us in the United States, the Thanksgiving holiday brings memories of good times with family and friends, and often a traditional turkey gracing the festive dinner table. We look forward to the day with great anticipation.

But that’s not the case for everyone. For some people, the holiday highlights the fact that they’re alone. Memories of happier times only intensify feelings of loss.

I understand. The sadness was especially acute for me the year family members planned to go elsewhere for the holiday, leaving me on my own. My mother and brother had passed on earlier in the year, which meant our traditional family gathering would never be the same. I couldn’t seem to lift myself out of a feeling of despair.
