Beyond fearful images: a deeper dive to healing

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

Some years ago, I was in the Hawaiian Islands during the winter. I really wanted to get certified to scuba dive, so I signed up for a five-day course.

On the first day, each person in our group was required to take a swimming test. The waves in Hawaii in winter can get pretty big, and that day was no exception. It was hard to hear our instructor over the roar of the crashing water.

We each had to choose a partner to swim with during the test. Most of us were adults, but there was one young man in his first year of high school. His eyes grew pretty big when he learned that we were supposed to swim out past those waves, swim parallel to the shore for a few hundred yards, and then come back in. I wanted to help him, so I asked if he would be my partner.
