A mother's long-distance prayer for her son

The phone rang. It was my son Chase, calling from school. He blurted out that he was in great pain.
He was scheduled to be in a strenuous sports class in ten minutes. His school requires that anyone who misses a class must go to the school infirmary, or else they’d be counted as cutting the class. Chase couldn’t even stand up, much less walk to the infirmary. He needed help.
Although I longed to be there to comfort my son, I fully trusted that the love of his Father-Mother God was already tenderly embracing and holding him.
As I listened for further inspiration for my prayers, the thought came that there could be no opposition to his doing good.
He was scheduled to compete in an academic foreign language contest later that afternoon. The winner would represent the school in a statewide competition. Chase had prepared well and had been looking forward to this for a long time.
He’d planned to call me to pray for him before the event, to help him feel close to God and aware of His presence and good plan for all His children.
At the moment though, his participation in the competition looked impossible.
I reassured him that God’s love was tenderly embracing him, and I shared with him a statement from Science and Health: “All is under the control of the one Mind, even God.” I affirmed that Chase’s health and well-being were under God’s perfect control.
Then I called the infirmary to explain the situation. I asked the nurse if we could have a grace period of ten minutes before someone from the infirmary came to pick up Chase. I said we wanted to pray about this and that we would be calling the Christian Science practitioner listed on his school health form to pray along with us. The nurse agreed.
After reaching the practitioner, I prayerfully saw that all the goodness Chase would be expressing at the contest had its source in God. The unencumbered activity of Spirit—another name for God—was supporting all the good my son was expressing.
The Bible states, “If God be for us, who can be against us?” That was the whole thrust of my prayer. I acknowledged and wholeheartedly accepted that no power could work against the omnipotence and omnipresence of Spirit.
Not even the human body could act outside or contrary to the harmony of God. All my son could express was the activity of divine Spirit—and that was painless, perfect, strong, and free, now and always. I was as sure of this spiritual fact as I was convinced of the unstoppable momentum of God’s goodness.
Almost immediately the phone rang again. Chase called to say the pain was gone and he was off to his gym class. I had barely finished talking to the nurse at the infirmary, and now I was able to call her back to let her know of the quick healing and to thank her for giving us time to pray.
What had seemed impossible was shown to be possible. Chase was free from the pain—and has remained so—and was able to compete in the contest. Because of his perfect performance, he was unanimously chosen by the faculty to represent his school in the statewide event.
As both Chase and I have learned, there is a spiritual foundation we can rely on when we face obstacles. We can no more be cut off from the source of all good, God, than a ray of light can be separated from its source, the sun.
It’s inspiring to acknowledge that all the good we express every day—whether it’s modest in its intent, a very important mission, or something in between—has its source in God. This prayerful affirmation makes a wonderful difference in our lives. It can turn any situation around to show that what God is initiating, He is also sustaining and causing to come to full fruition.
Nothing can stop us from expressing and experiencing God’s infinite goodness!
