We all cherish the spiritual laws and light found in the Bible, the Book of books. And we treasure the particular role of our textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, in illuminating “the inspired Word of the Bible” (p. 497).

Mrs. Eddy loved the Bible dearly. She turned to it early and often, and we love to do the same. She wrote, “The Bible contains the recipe for all healing” (Science and Health, p. 406). But there continues to be a perception that the Bible is hard to understand, is largely ancient history, or needs to be explained or interpreted through academic scholarship. These limiting beliefs—along with the numerous daily demands we each face—can tempt us not to take the time for deep study of the Bible, especially together with Mrs. Eddy’s writings. And yet, it “contains the recipe for all healing.” What better opportunity is there for spiritual growth than in learning to love and lean on the Bible even more?

With the aim of providing fresh ways for readers to do this, Bible Lens will be discontinued (as of the Lesson “God the Preserver of Man,” to be read in church services on December 14) and will no longer appear in the Sentinel or the Digital Edition of the Christian Science Quarterly. Although subscribers have appreciated the insights this well-loved feature has contributed over the past decade, we see a need for greater focus on the spiritual inspiration Christian Science uniquely brings to God’s Word.

In the chapter on Genesis in Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy explains, “Inspired writers interpret the Word spiritually, while the ordinary historian interprets it literally” (p. 537). So, along with making overall updates and changing the delivery timing of our healing periodicals (see the Board of Trustees’ announcement in the November issue of The Christian Science Journal and the November 17, 2025, issue of the Sentinel), we are consciously shifting to include more Bible-focused content in the Journal, in the Sentinel, on JSH-Online.com, and in The Christian Science Monitor’s Christian Science Perspective article. (The article “What our Leader meant” by Joseph Carl Markstein in the May 1941 issue of the Journal has stirred thought as we’ve prayed about this topic.)

Starting with the December 2025 issue, the Journal will include a monthly series titled “The Bible: Our Sufficient Guide” This new series will highlight a specific Bible passage, concept, character, or theme, and bring out a spiritual perspective on the Scriptures based on Christian Science. Though not directly connected to the weekly Bible Lessons, we expect that this feature will nourish readers’ desire to learn how Bible insights can be applied to our study of every Lesson from the Quarterly as well as in our healing practice of Christian Science. 

You may have already seen, once each week, that the Monitor’s Christian Science Perspective article is focused on that week’s Bible Lesson. We’re also developing JSH-Online.com collections of Bible-focused articles that will be available for easy reference and sharing. Additionally, look for an occasional note in the Sentinel about the history or context behind a particular Bible passage or account.
