THANKSGIVING

The sweet-brier boasts nor voice nor speech,No tongue the clover hath;Mute is the garden's rainbow reach;Yet perfumed joy each breathes to each,From June to aftermath.

A SCOTCH SUNSET

The day is waning! See, afar,Night's herald trims her peaceful light; As dew there falls on vale and heightThe silence of the evening star.

A THOUGHT

If for every kindly deedDone to us from day to day,We endeavored to take heed And return for it full pay—

SEQUENCE

I love the clouds that sweep the blue; The breeze, that trips the violets through; The swaying grasses, bending trees,The brilliant moth, the valiant bees,I love the shadows of the wood—I love to know that God is good!

STORM AND PEACE

With thunderous, raging sound,The wave's uplifted mightIs vainly dashed on ledge.
The heavens declare the glory of God.

OCTOBER

What radiance lies on every side! The mellow earth is crownedWith golden promise multiplied,From farthest bound to bound.

TRIFLES

A crumb from the Master's table,A tear from the love-lit eye,A pang from the mother's bosom,A beam from the noonday sky.
