The Responsive Heart

O Heart of mine, that I have deemed of yoreInconstant arbiter of flesh and bone,What dark deceit, what code of barbarous loreHave thus conspired to rob me of my own?

"Arise! Shine!"

Rejoice! The light of Truth is come!Awake, O voice that long was dumb!Thy heart's dried channels shall be filled,And earth's dark terrors all be stilled.

Facing the Light

One morn, one summer's morn, I sawA little child who stood and weptMost bitterly; and asking why,He said that ever near him keptA shadow, dark and deep, that went beforeHis steps, by field or stream or sanded shore.

O Heart of Mine

O Heart of mine, hast thou a place preparedFor that sweet presence thou hast sought so long?

How Great Is God!

If just one star were held in space,We still would say,How wonderful is God!And yet 'tis myriad stars,With orbits all their own,He holds above.

Humility

I pondered long and prayed to understandThe deeper meaning of humility;Asked that its presence might enrich my lifeAnd from vain pride and boasting set mefree.

Evensong

The music of a gentle seaUpon a lonely strand,Soft purple of a hazy duskEnfolding sea and land;Above, a tiny star or twoBring peace to me—and you,Whose home lights shine across the bay —All part of Love's great plan.

"The Liberty Bells"

This is the hour they then foretold—When earth, inebriate with crime,Laughed right to scorn, and guilt, grown bold,Knelt worshiping at mammon's shrine.
