The Messenger

The golden afternoon was drawing to a close, And the still peace of evening filled the sky; The drowsy air was hushed around the well Whereon the traveler rested, And the quiet benediction of the evening Deepened into glory with his presence.

Oh, deep shall I plant for the issue And pure be the seeds that I sow, That only the fruits of the Spirit My plentiful harvest shall know.

Love is Calling Me

I HAVE walked amid the pleasures Which the senses claim to give; I have tried to serve ambition, With its phantoms tried to live; I have tasted fleshly morsels, And I know their bitter tang— While above me, and within me, Love was always calling, calling me; From the sense-dream, from the shadows Love was calling, calling me.

Onward

Love led me home; by surging waves I passed; Nor turned I back until I came at last To open spaces where bright flowers grew, And verdure sparkled in the morning dew; My eyes were holden by the dawning day! I cannot dream again since I have found the way!

Renewal

Hast thou been sunk in sleep, Beset by dreams of weakness and of pain?

Perception

I see Thee only when I look above, Far from earth's vanities and fancied rest; I see Thee best when, bathed in living love, My grateful heart responds to Thy behest.

Obedience

Help me to always do Thy will, O Lord;Cast out of me all selfish thoughts and fears:Give me the grace to find within Thy wordThe light to guide me through this mist of tears.

Release

Time was, when my heart was breakingFor the blue firth and the heather hill,And the gold hush of a Highland autumnWhen time stands still.

The Meek

"Quiet of meekness"!* Can there be A holier, happier state than this?

Ask Not for Tomorrow

Ask not for tomorrow, Lift thine eyes today, See Love's bow of promise Span the clouds of gray.
