A press despatch that has been read this week by thousands of Portlanders gives information that New York city health officials assert that antitoxin "checks" diphtheria in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred.
The assertion that Christian Science leads to insanity, as quoted in the Dispatch, is only another instance of the profound ignorance which the critics of the Science display as to its fundamental basis and teachings.
If Christian Science is "the very negation of reason and experience," then Christianity as taught and practised by Jesus must be described in like manner, for Christian Science is founded solely and entirely on the words and works of our Master, and is but a renewal or continuance of his practical demonstrations of the power of Truth to destroy every form of sickness and sin.
In a recent issue a writer in commenting on health conditions on the Canal Zone, took occasion to say some harsh things about Christian Scientists.
The statement of a clergyman on the subject of Christian Science, in your issue of the 2d inst.
In taking leave of his disciples, Jesus said: "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

MISSIONARY WORK

In reading the testimonies of healing which appear in our periodicals, one may note how many times the writers state that their interest in Christian Science was first aroused by reading copies of the Sentinel, Monitor, or Journal which friends had sent them from time to time.

SIMPLICITY

One of the results of Christian Science manifested in the consciousness of the beginner is an appreciation of simplicity in all departments of life.

WEEDS ROOTED UP

Recently I found in my flower bed, a weed whose staying qualities seemed very tenacious.
In John's gospel, third chapter, we read: "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

THE ONENESS OF PRINCIPLE

The study and practice of Christian Science unfolds to its students the reality of good and goodness and the consequent unreality of evil and its phenomena; that is to say, as the true sense of good increases, the belief in evil becomes more and more anomalous, unlawful, baseless, unreal.
