PERSISTENT PRAYER BRINGS PERMANENT HEALING
Recently I found myself crouching down trying to retrieve something that had rolled under the sofa, and I was flooded with a huge sense of gratitude. Only a few years earlier, I had been confronted with a picture of almost total immobility. It made me realize that a written testimony of this wonderful healing was well overdue.
During the summer of 2006, I began to notice occasional signs of difficulty while engaged in normal physical activity. At that time I did not give this as much prayerful, metaphysical attention as it deserved. By Christmas I was finding that moving was getting painful and that my muscles seemed to be becoming a lot weaker. My movement became so restricted that I was no longer able to continue my professional work. My husband, Andy, soon had to care for most of my needs, including washing and dressing me, so he reduced his workload and occasionally took compassionate leave. My parents live in the same house, so they also kept an eye on me to see if I needed anything.
As a lifelong Christian Scientist, I was by this time addressing the situation by praying diligently. In my prayer I rejected the physical symptoms as a misrepresentation of me, allowing divine Love to fill my consciousness with spiritual truths about my identity as God's perfect creation. As Mary Baker Eddy wrote in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick" (pp. 476–477).
