No ‘delay’ to God’s present perfection
Last winter while I was attending a meeting in Houston, a rare cold snap brought ice to the area, canceling flights and stranding me at the airport. As I worked with the airline to try to get a flight out later that day, I received a text from my wife back home in Oregon that our five-year-old son appeared to be ill with the flu. Family members who were not Christian Scientists were very concerned, informing her that several children had been taken to the hospital just that week.
Things seemed to go from bad to worse. No flights were available, and the condition of my son seemed to be worsening. At that moment I realized that I was being drawn in to a mesmeric world picture of chaos and fear, and I had to get a handle on it. The thought “Thus far and no farther” came to mind from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 124). I knew that what needed to be handled was fear.
I was told by the attendant to head to the gate for another flight to get on standby. In that moment I felt a most natural impulse of peace and gratitude. It was not forced or contrived. I was so grateful for the attendant working diligently to resolve my situation. And I felt grateful that I would have time waiting at the gate to pray. I almost felt as if God was giving me this time to spend in prayer and get my thought straight.
