Dominion over flu
Mary Baker Eddy wrote of the news: “The press unwittingly sends forth many sorrows and diseases among the human family. It does this by giving names to diseases and by printing long descriptions which mirror images of disease distinctly in thought” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 196–197).
Every winter, when the media bombard us with reports of colds and flu, I am so grateful to be able to turn to our Pastor, the Bible and Science and Health, for the good news of man’s immunity from disease of any sort. Since I found Christian Science well over 40 years ago, I have felt divine Love’s healing touch many times.
One Christmas season, when I was suffering with symptoms of the flu, I turned my thought away from the body and read the Christian Science Bible Lesson for that week. Using the inspiring truths I was reading, I prayed to see my oneness with God. The Bible declares, “God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them” (Genesis 1:27). I knew God, Spirit, is perfect, so I, His spiritual image and likeness, must be perfect, too. I could not include anything unlike God.
When the symptoms seemed very aggressive, I filled my thought with these truths, denying the testimony of the material senses. Reading the Christian Science periodicals also helped me. Each article and testimony I read lifted my thought and brought such comfort and confidence.
After a couple of days the fever left, and I was grateful to be able to continue with my normal duties at home, work, and church. However, my face was swollen, and I had difficulty opening my jaw. I continued prayerfully affirming my oneness with God, knowing that He would take me all the way to complete healing.
At the end of that week, my mother and I attended a Christmas luncheon. The table was laden with delicious foods and desserts, but my jaw was still uncomfortable. I tried tasting some of them, keeping in thought Mrs. Eddy’s statement that “the poor suffering heart needs its rightful nutriment, such as peace, patience in tribulation, and a priceless sense of the dear Father’s loving-kindness” (Science and Health, pp. 365–366).
As I continued to affirm my freedom from disease, I soon found that my jaw felt fine, and I could enjoy the lunch normally. I have never again experienced anything like that. Since this healing, which occurred 18 years ago, I don’t remember even having a cold or flu. If any symptoms started to appear, they were rejected quickly through prayer.
What a Christmas present! In Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, Mrs. Eddy writes: “In different ages the divine idea assumes different forms, according to humanity’s needs. In this age it assumes, more intelligently than ever before, the form of Christian healing. This is the babe we are to cherish” (p. 370).
I am so grateful for the good news of Christian healing today!
