How the book of Revelation guides us

The belief that we are mortals governed by material laws is a mistaken sense
of our true being.

When I was introduced to Christian Science in high school, I always looked forward to attending Sunday School. I appreciated the discussions of Christ Jesus’ healings in the New Testament and learning about the ways in which the Old Testament prophets also proved God’s care and infinite power. I loved discovering how that power can still heal today.

Whenever the weekly Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly included passages from the book of Revelation, though, I admit I sometimes skimmed over those parts because I didn’t always grasp their relevance to healing. Over time, however, I began to realize that this book must be valuable. After all, Mary Baker Eddy, the author of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, includes an entire chapter on Revelation called “The Apocalypse” as part of the section titled “Key to the Scriptures.”

Recently, I was struck by chapter 10 of Revelation, in which the author, commonly identified as John of Patmos, describes one of his visions: “And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire: . . . and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth” (verses 1, 2).
