Hearing a word from behind alludes to the custom of shepherds calling out to sheep—or teachers to students—who had wandered from right paths. Turning aside from God’s law is a common subject of warnings to disobedient Israelites (see Deuteronomy 11:16; Joshua 23:6; Psalms 40:4).
