Hearing and heeding the “still small voice”

Everyone has spiritual intuition and it’s never too late to hear and heed it, even if we miss or ignore early warnings.

Heightened public awareness of modern slavery has reminded me of an occasion when spiritual intuition saved a friend and me from a dangerous situation.

My college roommate and I were traveling abroad, and one day, in a post office, we met a man who said he’d show us a nearby world-class music museum that somehow never got listed in tourist books. The minute he spoke, I felt an extreme antipathy toward him. However, my friend was enthusiastic about seeing the museum, and I reasoned that since we were going on foot, not getting into a car with him, there wouldn’t be any danger. We could just walk away if need be.

We followed him out of the post office and were soon in the city’s red-light district. He yelled something to a woman, and she came out and took a picture of my friend and me. I began to panic, and the impulse to run was almost irresistible. But I’d started praying fervently and listening for God’s direction, and despite the fear, I felt sure I should keep going.
