Deadlocked situation resolved

I would like to express gratitude for Christian Science regarding the blessing of a situation that seemed hopeless.

A couple of years ago a man called me to say that he had never received the title to a truck my company had sold him in 2005, that he was going to be charged a hefty fine if he did not get the truck off a city lot, and that he needed the title to have it towed. (The 1979 truck, which he’d bought for parts only, was now undrivable.)

I called the county title bureau, but there were no records showing that my company had owned the truck. I was told that old records had been purged and there was nothing I could do because the title could not be issued without proof of ownership, the vehicle identification number (VIN), and the last mileage reading. I found an appraisal inventory sheet with the VIN and mileage, but the title bureau told me the VIN was too short, as it was only eleven numbers and needed to be seventeen numbers. No VIN could be found on the now-very-rusted truck.

I started to get frustrated and upset about the situation, since it seemed unfair that even though so much time had passed, the man was now demanding a title or he would take me to court.

I knew I had to change my thought about this man and the situation. Jesus taught the Golden Rule, which states, “As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise” (Luke 6:31). If the situation were reversed, I would want someone to help me.

I have relied on Christian Science my whole life. I knew I needed to start praying and listening for God’s angel messages—the still, small voice that we hear when we silence the material senses and self-will. God is the all-knowing Mind, and man reflects this Mind; this spiritual fact becomes evident in our experience as we understand our relationship to God. It was not up to me to figure this out; I just needed to let Mind be reflected in me for the answer.

I started my prayerful work by rereading the article “God’s law of adjustment” by Adam H. Dickey (The Christian Science Journal, January 1916). The article speaks of God’s law as “applicable to every conceivable phase of human experience,” and says that “the effect of the operation of law is always to correct and govern, to harmonize and adjust.” The sentence most helpful to me was, “This law of adjustment is the universal law of Love, which bestows its blessings on all alike.” The Christian Science textbook says, “In the scientific relation of God to man, we find that whatever blesses one blesses all . . .” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 206).

As I felt new love for this man as an expression of God and knew that there was an answer that would bless both of us, the thought came to call the company that had manufactured the truck. They confirmed that older VIN numbers were only eleven digits. With this information, the title bureau was able to issue a title, and the man was able to have the truck hauled off the city lot.

The law of Love met the need for me and for this man. What had seemed like a deadlocked and hopeless situation was adjusted through God’s law, the law of Love—the only law there is.
