God’s hand in the Science of Christian healing

God continues on unhindered, guiding everything that the Christian Science movement gives to the world.

One time I traveled to the New Hampshire site where the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, grew up. This small parcel of farmland seemed so humble—insignificant, really. Though she went on to become a wise businesswoman and well-known public figure, I realized, as I stood there quietly by myself, that that wouldn’t have been enough to enable her to found the worldwide Christian Science movement. Nor could such an achievement been possible simply through being “lucky.” Clearly, it was God’s hand that had prompted, day by day and year by year, the steps of progress that led to the discovery of the Science of original Christianity and the founding of the Church of Christ, Scientist.

In our century, God’s hand continues on unhindered, guiding everything that the Christian Science movement gives to the world. As the Bible points out, “None can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?” (Daniel 4:35). And just as Mrs. Eddy was consistently guided—not just day by day, but moment by moment, thought by thought—“how to go / O’er the hillside steep,” as she put it (Poems, p. 14), so all of us as God’s children can access and discern that effective guidance today.

It is in quiet patience that we can perceive God’s will.
