Freedom from pneumonia symptoms
I am so in awe of the completeness of spiritual healing. When the law of God is applied, bodily difficulties evaporate from thought—much like dreams—and thus from our experience. Mary Baker Eddy states in her seminal book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine, revealing spiritual understanding and the consciousness of man’s dominion over the whole earth” (p. 14). What I most remember from each healing is the joy of gaining more spiritual understanding and dominion.
Several winters ago, I developed a severe cough, spent time in bed, and was not functioning very well. I called a Christian Science practitioner for spiritual treatment. I immediately felt relief and improvement, so I decided to release the practitioner from the case and simply continue to pray on my own. However, the cough lingered. When it became more aggressive, a family member was concerned and thought I should have a physician evaluate the condition, suggesting it might be pneumonia.
I immediately called another Christian Science practitioner, explaining how discouraged I was. I was distraught, wondering why I wasn’t able to heal this lingering cough through my own prayers. But rather than continue with discouragement and condemn myself, I thought about a concept I had learned in class instruction (a two-week course in Christian Science healing): Give up human opinions for God’s ideas.
I have witnessed numerous healings of my own and in my family by applying the universal rules of spiritual healing as found in the Bible and Science and Health, so I became expectant of seeing “man’s dominion”—my dominion—expressed tangibly as normalcy and health. This expectation was reinforced by the practitioner. She also shared helpful ideas about my relation to God, divine Spirit, reminding me that I have only one true being—not a material body mixed with a personal spirit, but an identity that is entirely spiritual, the image and likeness of Spirit. The practitioner explained that I was one with God like hands clasped together as one—God and His idea, man. I was in God’s presence and therefore could feel only His love and healing power.
I also prayed with an encouraging directive that Eddy gives in Science and Health: “Hold perpetually this thought,—that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being” (p. 496). I held to the thought that my being is anchored solely in divine Principle, Love, and I trusted that I could see this rule of normalcy, health, and healing demonstrated. The book of Acts states, “In him we live, and move, and have our being” (17:28); this also reminded me of my oneness with God.
Very shortly after I began praying with these statements from Science and Health and the Bible, the coughing just stopped. I felt complete freedom from the sickness, a deeper understanding of my spiritual nature, and an outpouring of gratitude.
It’s such a privilege and joy to know that God’s laws are eternal and reliable. I’m also very thankful for all the testimonies of healing recorded in the Christian Science periodicals. What a wonderful treasury of proofs of man’s dominion over adversity. Hallelujah!
