Severely injured fingers healed

My family and I were on a day trip to a local water park, and as we were getting out of the car, a gust of wind slammed the door shut on my hand. Once the hand was freed, I saw that there were very deep cuts on three fingers. The bleeding was profuse.

Looking away from the injury, I clutched several napkins firmly in my hand. To ease my family’s fear as well as my own, I declared aloud some spiritual truths I had learned in my lifelong study of Christian Science, such as the definition of God in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: “The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence” (p. 587).

I also said aloud the answer to the question “What is man?” from Science and Health (p. 475), which begins: “Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements. The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God. Matter is not that likeness.”

Thinking about these spiritual facts helped me feel God’s presence and goodness. I understood that as God’s perfect expression, I could not be subject to accident or injury. I felt the divine power at work, and soon the bleeding and pain stopped. We drove to a nearby store and purchased a glove to protect my hand.

Confident that God was taking care of the situation, my family and I went on to have a wonderful time. I continued to pray, silently, throughout the day, including pondering “the scientific statement of being” (Science and Health, p. 468). Knowing that I was totally under God’s umbrella of care, that I was not made of matter but was instead the expression of infinite Mind, I was at peace. By the time I returned home, the cuts on two of the fingers had closed. The wound on the third finger closed entirely a few days later, and I could use all the fingers normally in three weeks. The scars faded away soon after.

I am deeply grateful for Christian Science and for the privilege of Primary class instruction. What I learned in the class helped me to understand that the physical evidence of injury is an illusion, not the truth of my existence as a child
of God, and that brought about this healing.
