No more flu
When I was in college, I came down with the flu each year—until one year, when I began to experience the familiar symptoms again and decided not to yield to the false belief in contagion. Instead, I prayerfully refuted the mental suggestions of illness by affirming that, in reality, we live in a spiritual universe of God’s presence, governed by the laws of divine Love. I reasoned that an invading virus is impossible in the infinitude of God, good.
The Bible tells us, “Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling” (Psalms 91:9, 10).
I had learned in my study of Christian Science that the divine Mind, which is God, is always communicating its pristine thoughts to man, imparting the truth of our inviolable joy, freedom, health, and security. Dwelling with these divine thoughts, we understand that we are safe in “the secret place of the most High” referred to in the first verse of Psalm 91. How could we be anywhere else, when God is omnipresent?
As I prayed, I remembered that Mary Baker Eddy referred to “God with us” as “a divine influence ever present in human consciousness” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. xi). Glimpsing more clearly that God is the only Mind or power capable of thought and being, I felt my body conforming to this understanding, and I was completely healed of the flu symptoms within half a day.
In the forty years since this healing, I have never again had the flu, although I’ve worked with large groups of people in schools and prisons as a teacher, counselor, and chaplain. There were many times during those years when I was working with individuals who were exhibiting cold or flu symptoms, but I prayerfully maintained a consciousness of God’s love for His creation, which rules out the very existence of disease, let alone its transmission. The freedom from contagion I’ve experienced has been noticed by those I’ve lived and worked with and has led to inquiries about Christian Science.
Divine Love enables us to be law-abiding—for instance, following government mandates to maintain social distance and wear face masks—not out of fear of contagion, but out of compassion for those around us. And the knowledge of divine Love’s law of perfect health removes all fear.
