Breathing freely again
I have studied and practiced Christian Science all my life and have had numerous healings. I would like to share one from April 2020. One morning I woke up unable to breathe. Each breath came in gasps. I immediately called a Christian Science practitioner to help me through prayer.
The first thought that came to me then was from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures
by Mary Baker Eddy: “Undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses, Science, still enthroned, is unfolding to mortals the immutable, harmonious, divine Principle,—is unfolding Life and the universe, ever present and eternal”(p. 306). I also recalled this verse from the Bible: “I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me” (Isaiah 45:5).
I clung tenaciously to those passages. Thinking deeply about them, I reasoned that God, unchanging divine Principle, was unfolding to me spiritual understanding, and that God’s laws are ever present and eternal. Soon, I began to really feel God’s presence, and I sensed that He was saying to me, “Don’t be afraid; I’m right here with you.”
At that moment, I also remembered that my Christian Science teacher had admonished her students during Primary class instruction never to consent to evil in any form. Even as I held to the truth of God’s comforting presence and power, I felt my toes and feet growing numb. But I also continued hearing God’s assurance “Be calm and don’t be afraid. I’m right here.”
Then the thought came to just say no to the symptoms. With each breath, I said vehemently, “No, no, no!” Almost immediately my breath began to come more freely, my vision cleared, and my toes and feet felt normal. In less than 15 minutes, I was completely healed, and there has been no recurrence of the problem.
Thinking about this experience, I remind myself that I have never really lived in a physical body. Life is God, Spirit, and therefore, my life has always been spiritual. I’m constantly aware of what a precious gift Christian Science is, and I’m grateful for the sacrifices of Christ Jesus as our Way-shower, and for those Mary Baker Eddy made to bring spiritual healing to the world. I am also grateful for the loving help of Christian Science practitioners.
