A trustworthy guide to employment

I knew that there was a job that was uniquely right for me.

Not long ago, I couldn’t help but overhear a conversation in Spanish between two men who, like me, were waiting in line to go into a supermarket. One man was telling the other that he needed additional income and was thinking of looking for a second job. This would mean leaving home at six in the morning and not getting back until eleven at night, which would deprive him of precious time with his wife and four young children.

When the supermarket opened, I went in with everyone, but something prompted me to go back to my car to get a copy of The Herald of Christian Science. I wondered for a few moments whether I should give the magazine to the man, mainly because I didn’t know what his reaction would be. However, each issue’s articles and testimonies of healing, which speak to us of God’s loving care and healing power, have been such a blessing to me over the years, how could I not share it? These words from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures came to mind: “Millions of unprejudiced minds—simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert—are waiting and watching for rest and drink. Give them a cup of cold water in Christ’s name, and never fear the consequences” (Mary Baker Eddy, p. 570).

God had shown me a talent I didn’t know I had.

I found the man inside the store and told him that because Spanish is my native language, I couldn’t help but understand what he had said to his friend, and I wanted to give him a magazine called El Heraldo de la Ciencia Cristiana. I assured him it was going to help him a lot. He looked very happy and seemed grateful that I had thought of him, and he promised to read it cover to cover.

This incident compelled me to pray about the challenges of finding right employment and reminded me of an experience years ago.

At a certain point, I had to get a job with a very flexible schedule so I would be available for my family. I looked and looked without success. The few jobs I found didn’t give me the necessary flexibility. Also, most of them were jobs with which I did not identify and for which I was not well suited.

My family (parents, siblings, and others) began to worry because time was passing. Also, I had spent so many hours in this search that I was neglecting my study of Christian Science. I decided it would be best to calm my agitated and fearful thinking and put the brakes on the search, since it wasn’t allowing me to feel at peace and close to God. Instead, I dedicated several hours every day to gaining a better understanding of my true purpose as God’s child. I wanted to feel God’s—divine Love’s—presence and to listen for Love’s direction in the silence and stillness of prayer.

Each day I found needed inspiration and guidance from the Bible Lessons found in the Christian Science Quarterly, Lessons based on the teachings of Christ Jesus, who said: “Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? . . . But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:25, 26, 33).

A couple of days after beginning this consecrated study, I felt an indescribable peace and total confidence that God was guiding me. I knew that there was a job that was uniquely right for me, and that all that remained was for me to recognize it. I also knew that our supply of good comes from our Father-Mother God—from Spirit, never from matter—in the form of spiritual ideas.

There was a house in the town where I lived that had been for sale for a long time but had not been sold. The owner was selling it on his own, and one day while I was looking at the house and appreciating its many assets, the thought came to me, “Why don’t you contact the owner of this house and help him sell it?” This scared me. I responded, “Father, I don’t have any experience in real estate!” and immediately discarded the idea. But the next day, after my study and prayer, the same thought came to me again.

In my country, at that time, anyone could help a homeowner sell their house, as long as a real estate agency wasn’t involved in the transaction. When the house was sold, the owner would remunerate the helper based on a previously arranged financial agreement.

Confident now that God was guiding me, I contacted the owner of the house, and he agreed to let me help him sell it. Five days after starting to look for a buyer, I found one. God had shown me a talent I didn’t know I had. I continued to help families sell their homes, with great success. The work provided not only the income but also the flexible hours I needed.

Four years later, I once again felt divinely guided to make a career change, and I began training as a Christian Science nurse. My years of service in that profession gave me tremendous satisfaction, but most of all, they supported my spiritual growth, eventually leading me into the full-time public healing practice as a Christian Science practitioner.

I feel compelled to share this account in the hope that it will help others see that our divine heritage is a constant supply of spiritual ideas that meet every human need.
