Accident avoided through divine guidance

One night a couple of years ago I was driving on a four-lane highway. It was raining, traffic was heavy, and I had already been on the road for an hour. With almost another hour left to go in my journey, I called a friend to help keep me alert.

We did what we enjoy most—sharing spiritual ideas and inspiration. Our conversation was filled with ideas from Mary Baker Eddy’s writings, such as Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. One topic we discussed was the spiritual fact that all action is in reality under the control of God. I recall feeling a deep trust that man, as the spiritual expression of God, can never be restricted by material circumstances or fears.

All of a sudden, so much water was thrown onto my windshield that I couldn’t see a thing. The windshield wipers, which had been going at top speed all evening, were not able to clear the windshield fast enough. I started pumping the brakes to slow down as carefully as I could, and without forethought I steered the car somewhat to the left.

When I could finally see again, I saw that a man was standing in the lane I had just been in, and that his car was horizontal across that lane. There was some debris on the road, and to my far left, two more cars were stopped close to the guardrail. It was apparent that there had been an accident, and although no one seemed to be hurt, the people involved had gotten out of their cars. During the moment that I had been unable to see, I had turned the wheel to the left, and I now realized that I’d driven through the only space that was safe to drive through. Had I not changed course, my car would have collided with the man and his car.

As I reflected on what had just happened, I realized that in the many years I’d been driving in all kinds of road conditions, I had never before turned the steering wheel without being able to see ahead. Was it just a coincidence that I did so this time? No. I’m convinced that God, divine Mind, had led me to steer through the hazardous situation without harm. To me this was proof that God is ever present, always caring for His children and keeping us safe. The conversation I’d been having with my friend had strengthened my understanding of my oneness with God and had helped me be receptive to His guidance.

I was reminded of a statement on page 84 of Science and Health: “To understand that Mind is infinite, not bounded by corporeality, not dependent upon the ear and eye for sound or sight nor upon muscles and bones for locomotion, is a step towards the Mind-science by which we discern man’s nature and existence.”
