Quick recovery from a fall
One evening several months ago, my pant leg caught on a kitchen drawer, and I pitched forcefully backward, hitting my head on the corner of a cabinet door before landing on the stone floor.
Because I was too stunned to speak, my husband immediately called a Christian Science practitioner for treatment, as he knew that would be my wish. He held the phone up to my ear, and the practitioner spoke to me, affirming that all being is spiritual, not material, and is untouched by matter. After a while I sat up, and the pain subsided.
I went to bed shortly after, and slept deeply. But early in the morning I needed to get up and go to the bathroom. The next thing I remember was my husband trying to get into the bathroom. I had fallen on the floor, unconscious, and was blocking the door. The symptoms of illness were intense.
My husband called the practitioner who had been praying for me, and I recall being able to once again hear the powerful metaphysical truths she was voicing to me on the phone. Eventually I was able to get up and lie on a bed, and I listened as she shared with me many other statements of spiritual truth she had been praying with, including this one about man (referring to all men and women): “God is the creator of man, and, the divine Principle of man remaining perfect, the divine idea or reflection, man, remains perfect” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 470). The practitioner reminded me that I am perfect, the expression of God’s being, and that God, Spirit, is the source and condition of my existence.
Soon my thinking became clearer, and I rearranged my schedule for the day in order to have some quiet time to pray for myself. When my daughter called that morning and I told her I’d had a fall, I was grateful she didn’t ask for details but was tenderly compassionate. Remembering what she’d learned as a child in Sunday School, she said firmly, “There is no spot where God is not!” I loved that reminder. By the time we’d finished talking, I was sitting up, ready to shower and get dressed. It was a quiet day, but I never felt the need to lie down. Except for a little tenderness on the back of my head, which soon disappeared, there were no further symptoms.
Since that day I have continued to be vigorous and free. How deeply grateful I am for the living, practical truth we are taught in Christian Science; for the love and courage Mrs. Eddy demonstrated in sharing her discovery of Christian Science with the world; and for those who are practicing this Science for the benefit of themselves and everyone.
