Protected and guided during and after carjacking
One night I was driving home from a second-shift steel mill job in Chicago. It was raining as I neared my home in the suburbs. I saw something through the rain up ahead. When I pulled over I realized there was a person, a young man, who said he needed a ride to the railroad station. I said yes.
As I started driving, the man put a knife to my neck and told me to drive back to the city. I later learned that at that exact moment, my mom sat up in bed, and this verse from Isaiah came to her: “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee” (26:3).
Initially, I was shocked, but quickly felt that I was God’s beloved child and that God would guide and protect me. I knew God would also love, guide, and protect the young man sitting next to me because he was God’s child, too. I felt calm. The man quickly removed the knife from my neck. At one point he began to sing along with the car radio, and the thought, the inspiration, came to me to compliment his singing voice. He smiled, and his tone seemed to soften for a bit.
