Finding Christian Science and growing in it gradually
Years ago, I cleaned out my aunt’s apartment in Chicago after she moved to a nursing home. She was a Christian Scientist, and I took a few of the books she had left behind and added them to my personal library. I kept two books from the original We Knew Mary Baker Eddy series, and two pamphlets called “Undisturbed” and “Be Not Afraid.”
Over time, I read them repeatedly. I also made a habit of picking up the free publications, including copies of the Sentinel and The Christian Science Journal, posted outside Seventeenth Church of Christ, Scientist, in downtown Chicago. I always drew inspiration from these materials, and they helped me become somewhat acquainted with the teachings of Christian Science.
On another occasion, I saw a documentary on Mary Baker Eddy’s life, and the fact that she had healed herself after a fall stayed with me. Little did I know that God’s grace was gently preparing me for events that I would encounter down the road.
