Humility heals itchy rash

One morning I woke up to find a rash covering my entire body, including my face. I suspected that I might have come into contact with poison oak.

I prayed for myself as Christian Science teaches, but after several itchy days and sleepless nights, I finally called a Christian Science practitioner for help. The practitioner agreed to pray for me. She noted that the Christian Science periodicals include many healings of poison oak. She also talked about the Bible story of Naaman, a military captain who was healed of leprosy when he humbled himself and obeyed the prophet’s command to go and wash in the river Jordan (see II Kings 5:1–14).

Naaman’s experience gave me a lot to think about. At the time, my new manager was struggling with an important aspect of his job, and this led to disruption in the harmony our staff usually enjoyed. Since I had a lot of experience in the area where he seemed weak, I had decided I was just the person to whip this greenhorn into shape! Although I hadn’t spoken to him about it yet, I had plenty to say. But after talking with the practitioner and searching my own thoughts, I saw my own lack of humility. I knew that since God is the Father of us all, this manager was God’s child, and directing him was God’s job, not mine.
