Pain-free and burn-free
My husband and I were cooking dinner together one evening, and were at that critical stage in which everything needs to come off the stove at one time. Inadvertently, I reached for the hot handle of a pan without using a potholder. My initial reaction, without much thought, was to immediately thrust my hand under a stream of cold water—but only for a fraction of a moment before I rejected that approach and pulled my hand out of the water.
What went through my thought so quickly was a conclusion that appears throughout Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, a textbook on healing written by Mary Baker Eddy: that matter isn’t a real entity, and therefore is not a lawgiver to man. Matter is a projection of mortal thought, and not at all the creation of God, divine Mind.
In one of the specific examples given in this textbook of how to heal disease, Mrs. Eddy explains that we should “take up the leading points included (according to belief) in this disease.” She instructs us to show that the symptoms of the disease “are beliefs, images of mortal thought superimposed upon the body; that they are not the truth of man; that they should be treated as error and put out of thought” (p. 425). This applies to any challenge we may face. Seeing that the difficulty was not actually in matter, though it seemed to be, relieved my thought and took away the conviction that matter was substantial.
