Cold symptoms prevented
A week before my wife and I were scheduled to serve as substitute Readers, helping to lead services in our Christian Science Society, my throat became sore and swallowing was difficult. In the past this had sometimes led to other symptoms—but this was simply not acceptable, at this time, or any time! And so, as I’ve done before, I turned to God in prayer.
It occurred to me that this condition did not have to “run its course” through a parade of disease symptoms since, in Truth, it had no course to actually run. I’d seen before how prayer in Christian Science can prevent sickness, sin, and pain, and I knew this was possible here and now. I recalled Mary Baker Eddy’s statement on page 369 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “The prophylactic and therapeutic (that is, the preventive and curative) arts belong emphatically to Christian Science ….”
