Healed of food poisoning

In 2003, I was traveling around Australia for a year, and had gone to Darwin, Northern Territory, when I became affected by severe food poisoning. I had only my backpack and some clothes. Smartphones with instant internet access did not exist then. It was difficult getting out of bed, as I was very ill, had a high fever, and felt extremely weak. I had previously booked a seven-day trip into Kakadu National Park that would be starting in three days, and I was worried that I wouldn’t make it.

I was carrying in my backpack the tiny Vest Pocket Edition of the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy’s book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which had been designed for those serving in the military during the two World Wars. I started reading Psalm 91 and found verses 2–4 especially helpful: “I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.” These thoughts calmed me a little and allayed my fears. I knew that God was with me always, protecting, guiding, and guarding me forever.

I remembered this idea that I’d learned in Sunday School: “God is good; He guides me, guards me, and governs me.” I felt God’s presence and knew that I would be all right, as God never abandons His children; we are always under His wings. I put my trust in Him and continued to read and pray.
