Fever symptoms and stomach cramps healed
I would like to share a quick healing of a fever and stomach cramps, which I experienced a couple of months ago, and which meant so much to me.
One day I found myself having chills, severe stomach cramps, nausea, and an inability to eat or drink. I was quite concerned as the very next day I had an important commitment. We were also expecting our grandchildren; they were coming to spend the weekend with us, and we were very much looking forward to this precious time with them.
I decided to call my Christian Science teacher, who has always been a tremendous help to me, and ask her to pray for me. When I told her that the physical symptoms were screaming loudly, she replied, “We are not going to listen to that, but to the ‘still small voice.’ ” In that week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson there was the story of the prophet Elijah who observed “a great and strong wind,” an earthquake, and a fire (see First Kings 19:11, 12). But Elijah learned that “the Lord” was not in the wind, earthquake, or fire. Instead, what he heard after these things was “a still small voice.”
In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy refers to the “ ‘still, small voice’ of Truth” (p. 323). It was this voice, or message, of divine Truth—always speaking to human consciousness—that the practitioner encouraged me to pay attention to, as opposed to the aggressive physical symptoms.
As I prayed, I reasoned that God was not in the fever, any more than He had been in the wind, earthquake, or fire. The fever had no reality because God is infinite and entirely good, as Mrs. Eddy states in No and Yes on page 30: “God’s law is in three words, ‘I am All;’ and this perfect law is ever present to rebuke any claim of another law.” I reasoned that because God was not in the stomach pains, they had no cause because God is the one and only cause. And because God was not in the nausea, it had no power, since God is the only power.
I stayed with these truths and listened to hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal, and to a recording of Science and Health. The next day, feeling completely free and very grateful, I was able to keep my commitment, as well as welcome my grandchildren to our home for the weekend. I even had the pleasure of teaching a very full Sunday School class of little ones.
I am so very grateful for Christian Science and its healing power.
