International travel fears overcome

The moment I found out I might be able to attend my Christian Science association meeting again (after a six-year absence), I felt so happy. This association meeting is an annual meeting of pupils of the Christian Science teacher with whom they have taken a two-week course of instruction in Christian Science. These meetings always reinforce what we have learned about God and help us see things spiritually.

My teacher holds her association meetings in Los Angeles, and I would have to travel many hours by plane to the United States. So I became very worried. My US visa had expired, and I would have to apply for a new one at the US Embassy in Jakarta. My mind raced back to my experience when I last applied for a US visa so I could travel from my home in Indonesia to California so I could take that two-week course in Christian Science healing.

On that occasion, when I entered the embassy gate in Jakarta, it was like a war zone. The guards were full of weapons. They told all the applicants, “Put all your belongings here,” in a very demanding tone. And each of us was guarded and seated in an open-air area while waiting to be called for an individual interview. The interviewers asked us questions to find out if we were trying to go to the US to buy goods or to live, concerned we would not come back to our country.
