How God’s Word heals us
Mary Baker Eddy’s dedication to Scripture and devotion to God enabled her to receive the revelation of God’s Word and to understand that it is critically important, not only for mankind’s salvation from sin, but also from sickness, disease, and death. In her landmark publication, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mrs. Eddy refers to the Bible as “the chart of life” and as containing the “recipe for all healing” (pp. 24 and 406). God’s Word heals because it is Truth. Christ Jesus promises us that as we continue in his “word,” we will know the Truth that makes us free (see John 8:31, 32). And Mrs. Eddy proved this through her own healing and healing works.
In the book of Hebrews, three aspects of God’s Word are identified that relate to its healing power (see Hebrews 4:12). These aspects not only testify to the nature of Truth’s healing power, but also to the demands that the Word places upon anyone who would be a Christian healer.
First, the text points out that God’s Word heals quickly: “For the word of God is quick.” Jesus healed many who dealt with long-standing problems: the woman with the issue of blood for 12 years, the man with an infirmity for 38 years, the man who was born blind. With these healings, Jesus showed his total disregard for periods of convalescence. He proved the Word’s quickness by healing individuals immediately.
