Foot difficulty healed
In the winter of 2016, my smallest toe became very swollen, red, and painful. I pretty much ignored it. I thought, “Don’t be a wimp!” I’d had a lot of dance training in my youth, and I was used to not giving in to foot pain when I was breaking in a new pair of pointe shoes.
However, ignoring the pain wasn’t working. Because it was winter and there was ice and snow on the ground, my only footwear option was boots, and my foot hurt a lot wearing them. The toe became more and more painful and developed a thick callus. I was used to walking a lot, but now I was limping with every step.
Finally, after a couple of weeks, I realized I needed to take the time to pray about the difficulty, and I thought about this statement in the Christian Science textbook: “Look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 261). It occurred to me that instead of looking into divine Truth and Love for harmony, I had been looking to myself, relying on my human strength to get through the discomfort and hoping that matter would just get better; whereas, as God’s beloved children—His image and likeness—we are spiritual, and we naturally reflect happiness and health. When we turn fully to divine Truth and Love as the source of ever-present good in our lives, we see and experience our God-given freedom from the suggestion of pain. Our thoughts become so filled with the understanding that we reflect all good from omnipotent God that there is no room for any hurtful suggestions of the mortal senses.
