Calm and confident in God’s care

The psalms I love most are difficult to choose. But if I had to pick, I’d say Psalms 23, 46, 91, 121, and 139 because they reassure us so beautifully of God’s constant presence and loving care. Evidently, the author of these psalms had experienced this safety and protection firsthand. I love the metaphors used to describe God in these psalms, such as a loving shepherd, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalms 23:1), and as a mother-bird, “He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust” (Psalms 91:4). How comforting to think of God sheltering us no matter what we encounter.

For many years I prayed with these psalms after I finished studying the Christian Science Bible Lesson each morning. About three years ago, for no apparent reason, I felt led to express gratitude for the protection I felt from God in any situation, or in whatever circumstance I found myself.

A few days later, I was crossing the street on a dark winter evening and was hit by a car. Upon impact I felt no pain or fear. The angel thought came very clearly and distinctly that all was well. Some of the messages from the above psalms that I had prayed with on a daily basis came to me very clearly—that God was sheltering me like a mother-bird, and also that I was safe in “the house of the Lord for ever” (Psalms 23:6).
