Sudden paralysis reversed
One afternoon near the Christmas holidays, I was kneeling by our bed untangling a piece of jewelry. I was consciously grateful for the dexterity, control, clear vision, and perseverance I was able to express to complete the task. But as I stood up, I suddenly felt very weak. I called out to my husband, then collapsed in his arms as we met in the living room.
When I regained consciousness, I was lying on my back with my two preteen daughters kneeling next to me. My husband was on the speakerphone with a Christian Science practitioner, who immediately declared out loud the scientific facts of being—that God, Spirit, is All-in-all and that, as His reflection or idea, I am spiritual and perfect. She spoke with deep conviction.
Unable to move or speak, I just listened. Before long I was able to tell her that my hands weren’t working. The practitioner kept on vehemently declaring my spiritual perfection. She spoke aloud the paragraph at the top of page 102 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. It begins, “Animal magnetism has no scientific foundation, for God governs all that is real, harmonious, and eternal, and His power is neither animal nor human.” The paragraph goes on to state that animal magnetism—a belief in an intelligence apart from God—is unreal and therefore has no power.
