Normal breathing restored

One day, shortly after eating lunch, I found it difficult to breathe. I was at home with my wife and a friend, both active students of Christian Science. In just a few moments my breathing was labored to the point where I could barely inhale, and I was finding it hard to pray. I quickly indicated to my wife to call a Christian Science practitioner, who responded immediately.

I remember adamantly affirming in thought the supremacy of God, repeating vehemently that divine Mind is All, and even stomping my feet with conviction as I thought about the omnipotence of God. With that came a calming sense of the ever-presence and allness of Mind, Spirit. I could also hear my wife speaking Mary Baker Eddy’s comforting words from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “The calm, strong currents of true spirituality, the manifestations of which are health, purity, and self-immolation, must deepen human experience, until the beliefs of material existence are seen to be a bald imposition, and sin, disease, and death give everlasting place to the scientific demonstration of divine Spirit and to God’s spiritual, perfect man” (p. 99).

Because of the difficulty I was having, I could not speak intelligibly to the practitioner, but I felt his prayerful help right away. Gradually my breathing came easier, and I was able to sit, continuing to entertain a strong sense of the omnipotence of Truth. In just a few moments I was free enough to breathe normally. I asked my wife to call back the practitioner, and I thanked him from my heart.
