Restoration of normal bodily functions
Several days before I was to fly across the country to visit family, I was experiencing discomfort and unusual difficulty with the process of elimination. I began to pray right away. As a lifelong Christian Scientist, it is my practice to pray about physical challenges by affirming the divine laws of harmony and wholeness by which God governs man and the universe. One of these laws is found in Scripture and reads, “I will put none of these diseases upon thee … for I am the Lord that healeth thee” (Exodus 15:26). Another divine law is found in a passage from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, which reads: “There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all” (p. 468).
While I was pondering these metaphysical truths, which were familiar ideas that I had often turned to in prayer, it began to dawn on me that I needed a fresher sense of God, and that I needed to lift my thought more to God’s reality so that I would be less accommodating in consciousness of matter or physical complaints. Sometimes it can seem that the physical body demands constant attention, as if it were saying, “Feed me,” “Rest me,” “Wash me,” “Cool me down,” “Warm me up.” While it is right to take care of normal human needs, I was unnaturally fixed on listening to matter. To find healing, I needed to stop listening so much to the body. I needed to turn my thought to God and listen to what Spirit was communicating.
Two days before I was to fly, the physical condition became quite alarming. I found I was unable to eat or drink normally. As I prayed, I felt led to call an experienced Christian Science practitioner to give me Christian Science treatment. The effect of reaching out to the practitioner for help was immediate and humbling. As I hung up the phone, I felt the presence of God’s love and the assurance that all was under the loving control of God. This quick spiritual transformation of my thought was surely the result of the practitioner’s work for me.
