Obstruction gone
Some time ago my wife and I invited a friend to our home for lunch. We were having his favorite meal, pot roast. While cutting the meat for serving, I picked up a small piece to taste it. I chewed it and swallowed, but found that it had gotten stuck and would not go down. I tried to wash it down by drinking water, but the water came back up. I had hiccups and felt a pressure in my chest. This went on and off for most of the afternoon, and I wasn’t able to eat anything.
The first thought that came to me when this occurred was from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: “… ‘There is no death, no inaction, diseased action, overaction, nor reaction’ ” (pp. 427–428). This truth kept me mentally calm whenever the symptoms appeared, and I thought this discomfort would soon pass. So I went on with a woodworking project during the afternoon.
However, the problem persisted, and later in the day I decided to get more serious about prayerfully handling the situation. I was chilled, and the obstruction in my throat didn’t seem to be getting any better. To warm up, I built a fire in the wood stove, and then I picked up the Christian Science Bible Lesson for that week. The subject was “God the Only Cause and Creator.” I sat down and began to study and pray. I really tried to understand and apply what I was reading, which seemed so appropriate for my situation.
