Conquering the addiction to caffeine
Mary Baker Eddy writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings” (p. vii). Why lean on the “sustaining infinite”? Because God, infinite good, is sustaining us as His spiritual image, forever. His promise will not fail; we will not be hurt nor crumple when leaning on God.
Leaning on the shifting sands of matter, however, does not offer us reliable protection; any sense of security we may feel from matter is transitory, a false promise that cannot deliver true or permanent health and harmony. But as we grow in our understanding of God, we find that we can safely rely on His care, and this can be proved in our experience.
I learned this through my healing of caffeine addiction. I’d been looking for an answer to the demand of needing to be alert. And I’d been looking in the wrong place. For years I relied on coffee to wake myself up. Fast-forward many more years, and I was drinking a lot of coffee—for the caffeine effect—not only every morning, but in the afternoons also. I couldn’t stop.
