Symptoms of bronchial infection healed
Several years ago, I was struggling with symptoms of bronchial infection. I prayed, affirming that I am God’s idea, made in His image and likeness. I thought about the fact that God, Spirit, is my very source and substance. As I prayed along these lines, a passage from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy’s primary work, came to thought: “When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought” (p. 495).
I had always found this passage troubling because the admonishment to “cling” made me think of myself as a weak, helpless mortal vainly trying to connect with God but destined to lose her grasp, as a mortal cannot connect with the immortal. I pictured myself as separate from God.
How could this passage lead me to healing? I already felt as if I was clinging desperately to God ... but maybe that was the point: My perspective (of a desperate, clinging mortal) was not particularly enlightened, and it was certainly not the truth brought out in Mrs. Eddy’s book.
