The owl in the log

First appeared as a Web Original on August 18, 2014.

A couple of months ago, my son was feeling creative and decided to carve a creature out of a large log that had been left in our yard following a hurricane. After he’d been at it a while, I asked him what he was carving, and he said it was an owl. When he was all finished, I looked out the front door to admire his sculpture. I have to admit that it didn’t look anything like an owl to me.

Recently I took a lawn chair out to the side of the yard to enjoy the warm sunshine. As I sat there enjoying the glorious day, there right in front of me was the face of an owl in the log! I had been looking at my son’s creation from the wrong side, the wrong perspective, all along.

As I sat there enjoying the day, there right in front of me was the face of an owl in the log!
