It’s not about ‘following the crowd’
Even though I was raised in Christian Science, I resisted taking Primary class instruction. Why? I had always opposed “following the crowd” and felt I was being wrongly judged or rated according to whether I’d had class or not.
While serving in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, as Second Reader, I was asked to introduce a visiting Christian Science lecturer. While we were chatting before the lecture, he asked me if I’d had class. I told him, “No,” and when he asked, “Why not?” I told him how I didn’t like being made to feel I was an outsider because I wasn’t class taught.
When he very kindly said, “I understand how you feel,” I was so relieved. But then he added, “However, you would find your reading experience could benefit if you had class!”
