Freed from severe injury
One day almost 20 years ago, while I was horseback riding, my horse lost her footing and we both fell into a fence. Friends of mine who were watching later told me that my leg was between a fence post and the horse, and the fence was knocked down as we fell. I landed in a ditch and was knocked unconscious. My only memory of the fall was of another horse in the field curiously sniffing me with his big nose in my face.
My friends called an ambulance, and when I gained some sensibility, I told them to tell my husband to call a Christian Science practitioner. Shortly after the practitioner was contacted, I fully regained consciousness. My leg was severely damaged, and at the hospital many X-rays were taken, as the doctors fully expected broken bones. There were none. A plastic surgeon was brought in and my leg was stitched up. I was given crutches and sent home the next morning.
The Christian Science practitioner and I prayed with several helpful ideas. In Ephesians 4:16 we read, “From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.” For me this meant that in divine Love we are spiritually joined together, perfectly at one with God.
Another Bible verse that supported me was First Corinthians 1:10 : “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” Mary Baker Eddy echoes this thought in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “The divine Science of man is woven into one web of consistency without seam or rent” (p. 242 ). This helped me to see that nothing separates us from God, so there could be no separation or tear in my consciousness or body.
The injured leg began to heal quickly. In the follow-up visit with the surgeon the next week, he was amazed at the appearance of my leg and the healing that was taking place. I was told I didn’t need the support of crutches.
As I write this, I realize that in turning away from the material picture of an injury and looking to my spiritual status as the perfect child of God, I was obeying Jesus’ command to rise up and walk (see John 5:8 ). I was, in fact, able to walk all the while the healing was taking place (even though with crutches at first), and I was back riding again within three weeks, completely healed. I do not have any scars from the injury.
How thankful I am for the healing power of the Christ. All the healings I’ve had in Christian Science over the years give me much to think about regarding the omnipotent power and oneness of the divine Mind, God.
