A lifetime of healing
Health, protection, and abundant happiness have been some of the rewards reaped from my study of Christian Science.
When I was a young child, my health was frail and I was under almost constant care by physicians. I was frequently home from school with one childhood disease or another. I also took treatments for sinus trouble. Finally, in my seventh year, our compassionate doctor advised my parents that they must take me south, away from the cold climate of Detroit, or I might not survive the winter. So my dear parents sacrificed a great deal to do this, and I was taken to Florida. However, my health remained the same.
All through this early experience, I knew God could, and would, heal me. My sister and I had been enrolled in the Christian Science Sunday School from the age of three years, and I had learned enough about God to be convinced that He loved me and wanted me to be well. Though I continually questioned the use of material healing methods, my father, who was not a Christian Scientist, insisted on medical treatment for me.
My mother, who had attended a Christian Science Sunday School during her youth, decided one afternoon to call a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me. I was feverish and quite ill. Mother recalled that she was sleeping with me that night, and at 5:00 a.m. the next morning, I suddenly became cool and well. When she reported this to the practitioner, he said he had been giving me prayerful Christian Science treatment at that time.
With my health totally restored, we gratefully rejoined my father in Detroit and lived there until I was through college. I missed very few days of school because of illness, and was active in ice skating, tobogganing, swimming, hiking, horseback riding, and skiing.
I married a dedicated Christian Scientist, and our home was blessed with much love and joy. Our son was born at home quickly and with almost no discomfort. From age nine, he participated in sports. Throughout his years of football, basketball, swimming, soccer, skiing, and mountain climbing—and on a 1,000-mile bicycle trip alone—he has been beautifully protected by his spiritual receptivity to good and by our knowing his real identity as God’s child. His few incidents of minor injury were healed though his own prayers, and ours, sometimes with the aid of Christian Science practitioners.
In addition to those mentioned, other healings in our family include those of colds, flu, granulated eyelids, deep cuts, a back injury from a horse kick, an abscessed tooth, marital problems, a nonfunctioning tear duct, frequent headaches, and extreme self-consciousness.
I thank God every day for Mary Baker Eddy, who had the spiritual vision, the great courage, and the abundant love for God and mankind to share her discovery of Christian Science with the world.
