Swift recovery
When I was very new to the study of Christian Science, I had two amazing healing experiences that convinced me Christian Science is the answer for every challenging situation I could meet.
One day when my younger son, Peter, was about eight years old, he came running into the house crying that his beloved dog, Susie, had been run over by a car and was lying stiff on the side of the road. Although I was not experienced in the practice of Christian Science, I knew I did not need to accept the thought that she was dead. Some statements by Mary Baker Eddy came to me as I headed out the door to go to Susie:
“1. God is All-in-all.
“2. God is good. Good is Mind.
“3. God, Spirit, being all, nothing is matter.
“4. Life, God, omnipotent good, deny death, evil, sin, disease” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 113). I held to these truths, knowing that in reality, Susie could never be out of God’s care and protection.
By the time I reached the dog, she had gotten up and was circling in a slightly dazed manner. As I calmed her, I noticed she had many signs of injury, but the bleeding had stopped and the wounds were already closed over. Susie didn’t eat for a day, but was soon back to her normal self. I was astonished at how quickly she recovered, especially because several years earlier she had been hit by a mail truck, and it took many weeks, with vet attention, for her leg wounds to heal. What a contrast! This was a clear indication that “with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26) and that turning to God is the most effective way to find healing.
The second healing took place about five years later, while I was going through Primary class instruction in Christian Science. My son, Peter, was attending a camp for Christian Scientists, and one day I received a call from the camp director saying that he had been injured while playing sports. X-rays showed a broken collar bone. I loved this child dearly and was very anxious about him, since this was his first time at camp. Yet, my thought was so elevated from what I was learning in class that I was quickly able to see this incident as only a false belief that he could be separated from God and fall into danger. The angel thought that came to me was from a passage written by Mrs. Eddy in Unity of Good: “… let them apply to the waiting grain the curving sickle of Mind’s eternal circle, and bind it with bands of Soul” (p. 12).
As in the case of our dog, there was a marked contrast with a previous event. Peter had broken his collar bone some years earlier, and his whole chest had been bound with tape by a doctor. It took six weeks of discomfort for the bone to mend. This time only a sling was used, and this was removed after just a few days. My son experienced little discomfort and was active again within the week. He had truly been bound—healed—with the “bands of Soul.”
These healings were wonderful proofs to me that Christian Science is a quick and effective way to heal. And to this day, these healings have remained an inspiration to me as I have continued in my practice of Christian Science.
